The Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) is
committed to promoting the development of
lymphology in Australasia. The Association will
strive to improve the management of those with, or
at risk of developing Oedema and enhance
communication between health professionals,
educators, relevant authorities and government in
regard to oedemas and Oedema.
Association of Massage Therapists is a national,
not-for-profit association representing qualified
Massage Therapists and Massage Therapy
Students. Established in 1966, AMT is the oldest
association in Australia to represent massage
therapy in its own right and the premier
representative body for professional therapists.
Lympho.org A dedicated platform for the Oedema
community, the site conatians many useful
documents, frameworks and partnership
information for those dealing with Oedema.
Useful Resource Sites:
Better Health Victoria - Massage, an overview of the
benefits of massage for various conditions provided
by the Victorian State Government. Includes advice
on treatment for some disorders using massage
and an overview of the different types of massage
available.

Living With Lymphoedema - A Handbook for
Patients by Michael Mason
‘This excellent handbook, now in its third edition,
has been written for lymphoedema patients and
those who are at risk of developing lymphoedema.
It provides some basic facts about the lymphatic
system and the causes, effects and treatment of
lymphoedema. It also contains a list of precautions
and hints to be observed in the patients daily lives
which, if implemented, will greatly assist them in
living with lymphoedema. (Available to borrow from

Exercises for Lymphoedema of the Arm: A
handbook for patients and Exercises for
Lymphoedema of the Leg: A handbook for patients
by Michael Mason
One of the four components of Complex Physical
Therapy treatment for lymphoedema is a suitable
exercise programme.
These handbooks provide patients with a number
of clearly illustrated graduated exercises which
cater for all ages and all levels of physical fitness
and include some self-massage techniques.
They also provide information about the condition
of lymphoedema and advice to help patients in
their daily lives as well as being of assistance to
therapists in organising exercise programmes for
their patients.

information on the Dr Vodder method of Manual
Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), details of training and
publications.
Cancer Australia - Cancer Australia was
established by the Australian Government in
2006 to benefit all Australians affected by cancer,
and their families and carers. Cancer Australia
aims to reduce the impact of cancer, address
disparities and improve outcomes for people
affected by cancer by leading and coordinating
national, evidence-based interventions across
the continuum of care
International Compression Club - The
Consensus/Publications page contains a large
number of very useful articles on compression for
Oedema. The Educational Tools page contains
videos of various compression products.
Lymphoedema Action Alliance - The
Lymphoedema Action Alliance is focussed on
reducing the unnecessary burden for people living
with lymphoedema. Twenty organisations have
joined together to be a more effective voice for
improvements in treatment for lymphoedema.
The Alliance is working to ensure timely access to
affordable lymphoedema services and
compression garments regardless of where
people live, their financial status and their health
situation

Breast Screen WA - The BreastScreen WA program
provides free screening mammograms to
asymptomatic women and specifically targets
women aged 50 to 74 years, as the scientific
evidence of benefit from screening mammography
is greatest for women in this age group. However,
all women 40 years or over are eligible to attend.

What is L-Dex® ? The Lymphedema Index (L-Dex)
is a measurement system that is used to aid in
the assessment of unilateral lymphedema of the
limb (swelling occurring in only one limb). This
free guide from ImpediMed explains how a
measurement is used.

Oedema Research & Presentations:
Mandurah Oedema Research (MOR) - Our clinic
is in an ideal position to gain experience of a
wide range of oedema conditions & the effects of
various clinical treatments.
To further research into this often debilitating
condition, we gather evidence based research
and provide anonymised results to a select team
of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists,
MLD practitioners & other medical health
professionals for active discussion.

Mandurah Angels - Very active local breast cancer
support group raising funds and awareness of
breast cancer in Mandurah.

Lympoedema Australia began as an online
community bringing together those who are
effected by Lipoedema - a largely undiagnosed
disease which affects approximately 1 in 11
women in Australia. Lipoedema Australia is now
a national charity and is the peak body for
Lipoedema.
Lympoedema Foundation Lipedema patients
who are interested in participating in research
are encouraged to access available resources
and sign up to receive emails from the
Lipedema Foundation.

How Do Vaccines Work?
Latissimus dorsi (LD) flap Reconstruction
Latissimus dorsi (LD) flap breast reconstruction
involves rebuilding a breast shape by moving
skin, fatty tissue and muscle from the back
(below the shoulder blade) to the chest. Tissue
expanders are usually also used to create
sufficient breast size.
